· Tanzania: Every day at low tide, groups of women set forth from Zanzibar’s Stone Town beaches, bound for the exposed coral reefs of the Pemba Channel, in search of mollusks and other tidal treasures to eat and sell. With the return of the high tide, the women—now far from shore and waist-deep in the warm, crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean—are picked up by boat to return to their villages. · Peru: From Iquitos, the largest city in the Peruvian rainforest, we travelled down the Amazon to a village of ribereños near the confluence of the Napo River and disembarked at the village landing. The ribereños live close to the land and water, as have their ancestors for centuries, fishing and raising crops.
