· China Peace Card: Mount Huashan, China: With most of my belongings carefully wrapped in brown paper, tied with twine, sealed with a wax stamp, and mailed home at the end of my service in the Russian Far East program, I traveled lightly by train to Irkutsk, south through Mongolia, and into China. In Beijing, a fellow traveler told me about the Taoist holy mountain called Hua Shan, long a place of retreat for hermits and the devout who have found “the way.” Another train ride later, to central China’s Shaanxi Province, I began the long hike up the mountain around midnight so that I would arrive at the summit in time to see this amazing sunrise.

Near the top, I helped a seller yoked with produce baskets make the final ascent. He later recognized me when I passed him on my return, smiled, and handed me a beautiful tomato.

· Nepali Friends: Four friends take a break from working their families’ terrace farms on the steep slopes of Nirmalidanda, a village in the hills of eastern Nepal. Subsistence farming is the mainstay of Nepali hill people, who grow rice, millet, corn, and wheat, plus vegetables and fruits. Between Nepal’s tropical lowlands and the arctic climate of the high Himalaya Mountains, the fertile middle hills are home to an ancient culture that has developed from Tibeto-Burman groups that migrated over the Himalaya and live alongside Indo-Aryan peoples who came up from India. · Myanmar Monks: Two novice Buddhist monks hurry along one of the seven terraces of the Hsinbyume Pagoda in Mingun, northwest of Mandalay—much as young boys likely have walked or run here for more than 200 years. Built in 1816, the pagoda consists of seven concentric ascending rings around a central stupa, representing the seven mountain ranges that surround Mount Meru, the sacred mountain at the center of the universe in Buddhist cosmology. · Mongolia Girl: Sipping warm mare’s milk from the family’s communal bowl is the perfect way to warm up after a chilly afternoon spent rounding up the horse herd and milking the animals. While the whole family worked together outside, this girl stayed close to the family yurt, watching her mother round up the herd by motorcycle while her father roped the horses on horseback. · Two Friends: Antananarivo, Madagascar: Two happy friends take a welcome break in the grass beside a small outdoor brick factory on the outskirts of Antananarivo, Madagascar's capital. Today's workday involves two tasks: hoeing the field behind them in preparation for planting, and helping their mothers carry as many as thirty large bricks stacked on coiled cloths on their heads across the field to a village two kilometers away.
