Armenia
The town of Ijevan is famous for its large shuka, or market, and the robust selection of foods and goods it offers throughout the year. Luscious Armenian pomegranates and citrus fruits from North Africa are especially prized in winter, when cabbage and root vegetables dominate Armenian tables and fresh produce is hard to come by. Wintertime vendors selling fresh fruits in towns and villages across Armenia are a welcome sight indeed.

Guatemala
On Guatemala’s picturesque Lake Atitlán it is still possible to see fishermen using these traditional wooden cayucos for fishing, but motorboats have long replaced them as the main form of transportation. However, along this stretch of shoreline, the cayucos lie as relics scattered along the beach, serving only as a glimpse into the past. Luckily, the lake and its volcanoes—and the graciousness of the people— remain as beautiful today as in the past.

China
An afternoon of casual conversation is a favorite pastime of elderly women in the Dong village of Huanggang, which lies nestled in the mountains of Guizhou Province in southwestern China. Because Huanggang is less accessible than other villages, it is less visited by foreign tourists and has preserved more of its traditional culture, including dress styles. The Dong minority is one of 55 minority ethnic groups officially recognized by the Chinese government.

Botswana
Chobe National Park in northern Botswana, near the vast, inland Okavango Delta, is home to a great diversity of wildlife: herds of elephants and Cape buffalo on the Chobe Riverfront; lions, antelopes, and hippos in woods and lagoons; and in the marshy grasslands multitudes of birds are joined by migrating herds of zebras.<br/
Brown shadow stripes between the black bands on their haunches and continuing down and around the belly identify these as plains zebras, who live in stable, closed family groups. Plains zebras often greet each other with a nuzzle and, like these two, engage in mutual grooming, an important part of the social life of the herd.

Mexico
Contemporary street vendors in Mexico—especially the boys—often sport Western clothing and baseball caps. These flower sellers, with their oversized floral bundles, can sometimes be seen near brightly painted stucco walls, making for vibrant photographic portraits.
