  • Mount Huashan, China: With most of my belongings carefully wrapped in brown paper, tied with twine, sealed with a wax stamp, and mailed home at the end of my service in the Russian Far East program, I traveled lightly by train to Irkutsk, south through Mongolia, and into China. In Beijing, a fellow traveler told me about the Taoist holy mountain called Hua Shan, long a place of retreat for hermits and the devout who have found “the way.” Another train ride later, to Central China’s Shaanxi Province, I began the long hike up the mountain around midnight so that I would arrive at the summit in time to see this amazing sunrise.

Near the top, I helped a seller yoked with produce baskets make the final ascent. He later recognized me when I passed him on my return, smiled, and handed me a beautiful tomato.
